“Simplicity is often a complex array of creativity.”
The blank page is the ultimate source of inspiration when I begin a painting. The challenges, the possibilities, the movement toward an outcome - like silence provides a musician – the blank page provides an opportunity for endless results. Music, and its free flow within theoretical structures, is often an inspiration for me and the reference point of influence in my work. Like musicians finding the heart of a note within a scale, for me, creativity involves taking the complexity of ideas and images and distilling them down to their simplistic essence.
As a self-taught artist, I bring a new, fresh, and often misunderstood mindset to my work which is the essence of creativity to me, painting for my expression. My scientific, analytical mind is juxtaposed to the free-flowing, creative nature of the medium, ultimately, creating a unified and robust structure of beauty and order.
I begin each painting with ink and acrylic on a synthetic material called Yupo paper, which is conducive to the painterly flow of a water-based medium. My process allows details and marks to appear on the surface, which unify the visual composition after my process-oriented painting is complete. I often use photo references as a starting point for blocking in the form, with colors and shapes as abstract concepts vs. literal interpretations.
My free-flowing, painterly techniques alternatively influence my analytical mind, allowing for more open-ended opportunities and "happy accidents" throughout my life. Painting is a process of ultimate escape where I transcend the ordinary and analytical to escape into the process of art for the sheer enjoyment of it while allowing the creative process to unfold into endless possibilities.
Ultimately, I am interested in creating works that evoke a moment in time and meaning from a free-spirited studio practice – with no preconceived notions of what may happen.
